The Chinese ethnic city of Santikkhiri in the province of Chiang Rai hosts the annual cherry blossoms festival from 28 December to 2 January each year.
Santikhiri hosts the annual cherry blossoms festival as the lost army of the KMT some fifty years ago brought and planted ornamental cherry trees to remind them of China. Since then they have planted hundreds of them in the area. The festival, which is organized by Mae Salong Nok Tambon Administration Organization in association with Mae Fa Luang District. The festival celebrates the cultural differences with in the local people from the Chiang Rai area. Besides the chance to see the trees in blossom there is also a handicraft sale, a light and sound show, a parade by the tribes people, and as always a beauty contest, being the area is famous for its lighter skinned ladies there is a great honour to win.
