An ordinary town with an extraordinary past – that summarizes the Chiang Saen town. Abode to the founder of the Kingdom of Lanna, King Mengrai, Chiang Saen, is a collection of several villages. Mae Khong River lucidly flows in the north side of the Chiang Saen Lake. The lake has been developed for various water activities like swimming, boating and fishing and is located in the southern side of the town. The Chiang Saen National Museum is situated in the old city. It is popular due to the presence of Buddha images and sculptures. The artifacts from the flourishing 12th century Chiang Saen Kingdom also make an impressive contribution to the collection. The museum is open to the visitors from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed on the Mondays, Tuesdays and national holidays. The admission fee is 30 Baht.

The specialty about the Chiang Saen National Museum is the artifacts which assert the early presence of the human being in the district. Even though the museum is small, a visit to it will make you aware of the rare and intriguing artifacts of an ancient civilization. Numerous object d'art from the Lanna dynasty can be viewed. Things of everyday use such as pottery, weapons, fish nets and traps and an assortment of kitchen utensils that were important to the people belonging to that era can be seen. Amulets, stucco work and ceramics typically belonging to northern Thailand type of art are displayed in the museum.

It has books on the Thailand history, religion and culture. Various books on other Asian civilization can also be found. You can find information on the artifacts that were excavated and date back to the pre-historic time. The highlight of the Chiang Saen National Museum is the bronze Buddha image. You can also find stones on which you will see inscription from the Phayao and Chiang Saen. Exhibits include musical instruments, ornaments and opium related tools.
