Chiang Mai National Museum is the main regional museum of northern Thailand. The fine Arts Department has assigned this museum to be the center of education and preservation of art and culture of Chiang Mai and upper northern Thailand, the old Lanna Kingdom. It has a number of exhibit halls but really it is a administrative department and the effort taken is less than it could be.
Note:
If you want your "fake" antique Buddha head or statue exported it must be certified here for a fee, before exporting is allowed, seems to be the most interesting and profitable activity going on here. One can easily and illegally mail them out without proper papers but never carry in your hand luggage as Thai Customs must confiscate all Buddha images without papers, no matter how cheap it is. Of course you unless your an expert will not get a real antique Buddha image even if you pay the price for a genuine one. Many collectors have excellent reproductions that are sold a authentic piece, that are masterpiece reproductions, even some museums have them on display as original, sometimes only the only forges knows for sure.
The museum is designed as a Thai style building with suto a traditional northern of Lanna style rooftop.
