The Chiang Mai City Arts and Culture Centre

E-mail Print PDF

The Chiang Mai City Arts and Culture Centre was created to help local people understand the city's historical importance and culture.

This fully modernized multimedia history and cultural education complex is in the very center of the old walled city in the old city hall building on Prapokklao Road between Rajdumnern Road and Rajwithee Road. It is also referred to as  the "Three Kings Monument" (Saam Kasat); (AKA Three men waiting for a bus by some expats) it's the large, restored white building just behind the famous statue.

In addition, the center contributes to conservation  tourism by preserving the heritage of the old city center and giving visitors the opportunity to know and understand the history of the city of Chiang Mai

After you watch the interesting English-subtitled orientation video about Chiang Mai and northern Thailand. Then you can wander around  rooms documenting the region's history and culture. They set out in chronological order from the pre-Muang period (700-1200 years ago) civilizations. Then the early kings through the wars with the Burmese and the last of the Local dynasty. There are also rooms devoted to Buddhism, agricultural development, hill tribes and other local cultures.

The mix of video, scale models,   photos,  murals and signage in Thai and English make for a truly entertaining, informative and eductional visit.
