Thai Tuk Tuk

E-mail Print PDF

Tuk Tuk is not really a local traditional transport for Chiang Mai. They actually where brought to Chiang Mai some twenty years ago and have become an integral part of the city scene. It was not with out some hassles with the see-lours trying to keep them out with some bumps and crashing but they have become a favorite of western and Bangkok tourists alike.

They run on two cycle engines running on propane which are water cooled and often in the earlier years feed used oil which causes too much pollution, today that practice is no longer common. They are cheap to make but the commercial license is what costs so much that the average drivers can not afford to purchase the tuk tuk they drive so they are rented on a daily bases or monthly one. Sadly some lower class tuk tuk drivers harsh tourist by honking and yelling at every tourist they see, to the point that...... well best you do not encourage it by hiring these ones. A friendly hello is of course not what I am referring to...

The friendly and helpful tuktuk driver pictured here is "Kaek" , "tuk-tuk driver extraordinaire". She can usually be found on Rajdamnoen, Soi 1 (Behind Montri Hotel).
