The Sunflowers of Mae Hong Son

Northern Thailand has some breathtaking scenery during the winter season from November to December. The entire countryside is filled with the blooming sunflowers painting the landscape yellow. Sunflowers are grown in some northern districts and Doi Mae U-Kho in Mae Hong Son province is chiefly known for the cultivation of this golden flower. Known as Bua tong (or Golden Lotus) in Thai, they are in fact Mexican Sunflowers (the botanical name being Tithonia Diversifolia).  


The sunflowers are spread over an area of 400 hectares in the forest of Bua Tong. This forest is located 1,600 meters above the sea level in the Doi Mae U-Kho Mountain. When this highland bursts into the sunshine color, the natural exhibition attracts numerous tourists. Each year a large number of tourists arrive here not only to hold the spectacle but also to enjoy the pleasant weather. The best time to see the sunflowers is during sunset or dawn. However, you can’t enter the sunflower fields.

 The Sunflowers of Mae Hong. The route from Chiang Mai includes the Highway 108 via Mae Sariang. From here you can turn northwards to Mae Hong Son. It takes about 5-6 hours to cover the distance between Chiang Mai and Khun Yuam by car and motorbikes will take longer.    

 Most of the tourists over there are of Thai nationality. Getting there is easy and from Mae Hong Son you have to take the 108 Highway South to Khun Yuam. You have to get off the highway 30 kilometers before and follow the directions to The Sunflowers of Mae Hong Son. The distance between Mae Hong Son city and Khun Yuam can be covered within 2 hours and the last 30 kilometers can be covered in 45 minutes straight.

Tree Marigold is used in Mexico to treat sprains, bone fractures, bruises and contusions, in Southern China they are used to treat skin diseases (such as athlete's foot), night sweats, as a diuretic, hepatitis, jaundice and cystitis; sold in herbal medicine markets in Taiwan to be infused to improve liver function; Is the provincial flower of Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand; but It is considered a weed in parts of Nigeria and Kenya.
