MAE HONG SON the most mountainous province in Thailand. The capital city also called mae Hong Son is nestled in a deep valley hemmed in by high mountain ranges, Mae Hong Son has long been isolated from the outside world It is composed of a total of 13 814.4 square kilometers, even today
11 981 square kilometers of which are jungle and mountainside, which accounts for 90% of the total area and virtually covered with mist. The mist covers the mountain tops throughout the year, forming frost in the winter months and from the clouds in the rainy season.
In the past former governors of Chiang Mai used to organize the rounding up of wild elephants which were then trained before being sent to the capital for work. Today, Mae Hong Son is one of the dream destinations for many Thai visitors. Daily flights into its small airport bring growing numbers of tourists, attracted by the spectacular scenery, numerous hill tribe communities and soft adventure opportunities.
