AFECT GO TRIBAL RAINFOREST ADVENTURE
The hilltribes in Northern Thailand attract many NGO's and the oldest is called AFECT - The Association For Akha Education and Culture in Thailand. AFECT was started by some anthropologists from Holland in 1981 and it's the only organization preserving AKHA shamanic culture in all Asia. AFECT has many programs helping the villages throughout the Chiang Rai area but the GO TRIBAL RAINFOREST ADVENTURE is really special. What is so diferent about it, is that its a genuinely culturally enriching experience.
AN NGO MANAGED BY TRIBE FOR TRIBE
The program is a 100% non profit scheme where all the revenue generated goes directly back into the poor and needy Akha communities to carry out conservation and development activities. your entry fee help to educate children and adults, form and strengthen local institutions and develop the local economy while conserving natural and cultural heritage.
The weekly and 3 day Go Tribal Experience™ begins every Monday and Thursday. They pick you up at either the bus station or airport in Chiang Rai ( 3-4 hours bus ride from Chiang Mai) and take you to their volunteer base in San Jai near the Burmese border. This is a beautiful protected area surrounded by forests and pristine ecosystems, and from where the programs take place.The villages are culturally protected by UNESCO (United Nations) and well off the beaten backpackers route, so you can experience the true customs and traditions unchanged for hundreds of years. That's what makes these villages so special - they are unspoiled and you become a part of them not just outsiders looking in.
Living in the villages affords you the experience how Akha live, work, relax and perceive the world. Partaking in daily village activities connects with the villagers, you becaome a member of the family, not just an tourist.The workshops on shamanism, naturopathy, ecology and mythology are not just dry lectures but fun activities making this a unique way to experience the Akha culture and heritage. Our homes are to be found deep within the hills and sacred forests located between Chiang Rai and Burma border, in a breath taking and beautiful natural setting.
