The Chiang Mai track is northwest of the moat behind Rama IX Park, off Chotana road (Rt. 107) Road with the canal road. Horse races are held every Saturday starting at 12:30 pm and run till about 5:30 pm. You can enjoy eight to ten races any given Saturday, with 20 minute intermissions. Avid race track fans will have a hard time studying the "racing form" as they are only in Thai. However the winner’s circle is often filled with the selected horse well before hand, as rumor has it most races are fixed. But never the less, it is fun and still just a matter of luck. I almost always bet the losing horse anyhow rigged or not. So what is the difference? Like in the west all Jockeys give 100% all the time...
Newsweek International some 8 years ago reported, “The multi-billion Thai horse racing industry is one of the most corrupt in Asia with backroom deals occurring on a regular basis.” The Thai army is filled amazing powers and their ability to decide horse races before hand, is a better skill than the ability to invade oil rich countries to "offer democracy" in a another countries citizens, when they have yet to dismantle their electoral college, to allow their own people a real democracy.
Most all gambling is of course illegal in Thailand except when the government benefit (taxes by choice) so , lay down your bets. The track allows win or place bets. A win is first place only bet. A "place" is either a first, second or third will pay out. Odds are floating, so best place your wager when the odds or know, which is the last few minutes ad that is when the Rupert's bets are placed.
Admittance is low, but betting can be expensive but a wonderful afternoon with the local boys is well worth the time and money spent. It is also a good idea to stay with the stands and avoid the club house...hahaha
