The Chinese New Year is very much a local celebration in Chiang Mai. It is not too large but attracts several local Thai Chinese from Bangkok, who of course take the better part of the week off from their businesses in Bangkok.

It is centered around the old China Town area. They block off the road and the whole area is a mass of food stalls and activities.  The Lion Dance and the Dragon Procession are two of the most spectacular cultural performances. The lion dance there is a great improvement over the normal  Lion dancer that is to be found wandering the streets hustling money from Chinese business owner.

It is also a time to show off Martial Arts, have Children competitions, The  Fireworks displays is a nice show and a Chinese Food stall stay open late and the parting  goes on until late into the night.
